As time flowed, the ranch expanded both in size and significance. By 1966, the ranch had grown to encompass roughly 1,000 acres, becoming home to 1,000 sheep and approximately 200 cows. Tragically, the same year, Frederick passed away. Yet, his legacy endured, carried forward by his two sons—Walter Adolph Hunzeker and Frederick William Hunzeker.
Evolution and Identity:
In the wake of the 1966 division, Fred assumed responsibility for the sheep and 60 cows. This segment of the ranch retained the name “Fred W. Hunzeker and Sons,” a name echoing through time. In a significant shift, Walter preserved the original “61” brand for his cattle, while Fred introduced the iconic Lazy-JX brand, an emblem synonymous with the ranch’s enduring legacy.
